First aid for dogs (checklist)

What to do in an emergency: STAY CALM, EVEN IF IT SEEMS DIFFICULT.

Initial situation

  • The dog is in a health emergency situation, no measures have been taken yet.
  • An injured dog is often very afraid and in a lot of pain.
  • The dog could run away in shock (e.g. there is a risk the dog could get run over by a car, or try to hide somewhere inaccessible).
  • The dog should be calmed down and put on a leash.
  • Depending on the circumstances, a mouth sling (muzzle) should be applied if possible.

Calming the dog down

  • Try to have a calming effect on the dog.
  • The dog senses the mood of the helper.
  • The dog must not perceive the treatment as punishment or even feel threatened.
  • Keep those around the dog calm; panic does not help anyone!
  • If necessary, ask bystanders to keep their distance.
  • Approach the dog very slowly.
  • Talk in a calm tone: ... everything will be all right ... calm down...
  • Avoid fast movements.
  • Observe the dog, especially the eyes and facial expression.
  • If the dog opens its eyes or growls when approached, do not approach further.
  • Continue to reassure the dog until a further approach appears possible/safe.

Leash

  • If the dog is not already on a leash, leash it now.
  • The dog could run away in shock (e.g. there is a risk the dog could get run over by a car, or try to hide somewhere inaccessible out of panic or fear).
  • Continue to have a calming influence on the dog.
  • Tie the loose end of the leash to an immovable object once the dog is on the leash

Secure and fix the dog

  • The dog is now on a leash.
  • Tie the loose end of the leash to an immovable object once the dog is on the leash.
  • Suitable objects for fixation are, for example, a table leg, lamppost, other fixed post, traffic sign, fence post, railing, or similar.
  • Pull the dog towards the object with the help of the leash wrapped around the object.

Further measures

  • Further measures can now be taken depending on the individual circumstances.
  • For self-protection:put on a muzzle or muzzle sling.
  • If the emergency has occurred in road traffic, put a protective vest/emergency cloth in reflective colors on the dog.
  • If necessary, place the dog in a stable lateral position.
  • If necessary, protect the animal from cooling down with a thermal blanket (gold foil).
